How to Find Your iPad Model Number (and Which iPads Share Parts)

“iPad 10.2”, “iPad 9th generation” and “iPad 2021” are three names for the same iPad. Meanwhile “11-inch iPad” could mean half a dozen different models with different screens. When a customer tells you which iPad they have, the A-number is the only way to be sure. Here's how to find it and what it tells you.

What the A-number is

Every iPad has a model number that starts with A followed by four digits, for example A2602, which is an iPad (9th generation). Each generation has several A-numbers, covering the Wi-Fi and Wi-Fi + Cellular versions and different regions, so the tables below list all of them.

Don't confuse it with the part number, which looks like MK2K3X/A. That's the sales code for one colour and storage size, and it's the number Settings shows first.

How to find the A-number

1If the iPad turns on: go to Settings → General → About. Next to Model Number you'll see a part number such as MK2K3X/A. Tap it and it changes to the A-number.
2If the screen is dead: look for “Model A____” in the small print on the back of the iPad. If it isn't there, Apple says to look inside the charging port in bright light, on the upper side (the screen side) of the connector.
3Write it on the job ticket as soon as the iPad comes in, so you don't have to look again when you order.

The names that cause mix-ups

  • iPad (A16), 2025: Apple doesn't call it the 11th generation, but many people do. We list it as iPad 11 [2025]. It shares its LCD and touch screen with the iPad 10.
  • “11-inch”: could be an iPad Pro 11 from any of four generations (2018 to 2022), a newer M4 or M5 iPad Pro, or an iPad Air 11 (M2 or M3). These are different screens.
  • “10.2-inch”: the iPad 7, 8 and 9, which do share most parts.
  • “9.7-inch”: covers the iPad 5, iPad 6, iPad Air, Air 2 and iPad Pro 9.7. They look similar but don't all take the same parts.
  • iPad Air 4 vs Air 5: almost identical from the outside. The A-number is the quickest way to tell them apart.

Wi-Fi or Wi-Fi + Cellular?

Each generation's A-numbers cover both versions, and some parts differ between them. On the iPad 10 and iPad Air 4, for example, we list separate charging ports for the Wi-Fi and Wi-Fi + Cellular models, and in each colour. On iPads up to 2022, a SIM card tray on the side means Wi-Fi + Cellular. Newer models may be eSIM-only, so check the listing against the exact A-number.

Same size doesn't mean same part

The iPad 5, iPad 6 and iPad Air all take the same LCD, but the iPad 6 needs its own touch screen. And while most Air 4 and Air 5 screens fit both, we do carry one refurbished screen marked “for Air 4 only”. Always read the compatibility list in the product title.

Quick checklist before ordering iPad parts

  • Find the A-number, not the part number or the name the customer uses
  • Match it to the generation using the tables above
  • Check whether it's Wi-Fi or Wi-Fi + Cellular for charging ports and flex cables
  • Match the colour for charging ports, home buttons and touch screens
  • Not sure? Send us the A-number and we'll check for you
