Samsung Galaxy A Charging Port Board Replacement: A35, A36, A55, A56 and More

On current Galaxy A phones, the USB-C port isn't soldered to the mainboard. It sits on a small sub-board at the bottom of the phone, joined to the mainboard by a flex cable. That makes a charging port repair a straightforward board swap, and on most models the same board also carries the main microphone.

Is it really the charging board?

The usual signs of a worn or damaged board:

  • Not charging, or charging only when the cable is held at an angle
  • Slow charging, or fast charging no longer showing
  • A Moisture detected warning that won't clear
  • Callers can't hear the customer, but video recordings have sound
  • The phone isn't recognised by a computer

Rule out the easy causes first. Samsung's own checklist:

  • Try a different charger and cable. Super Fast Charging needs a matching adapter (25W, or 45W with a 5A cable on models that support it).
  • Check that Fast charging is on and battery protection isn't limiting the charge (Settings → Battery → Charging settings).
  • Power the phone off and inspect the port with a torch. Lint packed into the port is common. Don't use metal tools or liquids.
  • Run Samsung Members → Diagnostics → Cable charging.
  • If the warning is Moisture detected, let the phone dry first. Samsung says moisture normally evaporates within one to two hours.

When a new board won't fix it

If the phone still won't charge with a known-good board fitted, the fault may be in the charging circuit on the mainboard, for example a failed protection chip after a bad charger. Swap the board as a test before quoting it as the fix.

What's on the board, by model

Model Back cover On the board besides USB-C
A15 4G / 5G Plastic, glued Antenna connections
A16 5G Plastic, clipped Microphone
A25 5G Plastic, glued Microphone, 3.5mm headphone jack
A34 5G Plastic, glued Microphone
A35 5G Glass, glued Microphone, loudspeaker contacts
A36 5G Glass, glued Microphone, SIM tray connector
A54 5G Glass, glued Microphone
A55 5G Glass, glued Microphone
A56 5G Glass, glued Microphone, SIM card reader

Because the microphone is on the board, a board swap often fixes "they can't hear me on calls" complaints at the same time. Test both after the repair.

The replacement route

All of these models are opened from the back. You don't need to remove the screen.

1Prepare. Run the battery below 25% and remove the SIM tray.
2Remove the back cover. Glued backs need gentle, even heat to soften the adhesive before you work a pick around the edge. The A16 5G back is clipped on instead.
3Remove the covers. On the A34, A35, A36, A54, A55 and A56, unscrew the top plastic cover and the bottom loudspeaker assembly. The A15 and A25 use a one-piece midframe instead.
4Disconnect the battery first, before any other connector.
5Free the board. Disconnect the interconnect flex, the antenna coax cables and any other flex on the board, then remove its screws. Lift the board out without prying underneath it.
6Fit and test before closing. Check charging, fast charging, a test call and a voice recording, and a computer connection. Then refit the covers and fit new back adhesive.

Match the model code

Galaxy A phones are built in several regional versions, and the boards aren't always the same. Samsung's US-model boards for the A35 and A16 5G, for example, carry different part numbers from the international ones. Check the full model code in Settings → About phone and match it to the product title.

Australian models we see most often: A35 SM-A356E, A55 SM-A556E, A56 SM-A566B, A16 5G SM-A166P. If your model code isn't listed in a product title, send it to us and we'll confirm the right board.

Original or aftermarket?

Listings marked [Original] are genuine Samsung boards. Aftermarket boards cost less but can vary, most often in fast charging support. Whichever you fit, confirm the phone shows fast charging with a suitable charger before it goes back to the customer.
